This book was written in 1997 and much changes on Amazon quickly. From the beginning of the book you are looking for things that either no longer exist on Amazon or have been moved completely. While I was able to locate a lot of the things that he discusses and the book made me aware of some things I did not know about on Amazon, most of the tools I ended up finding myself (before I found their section in the book) as I stumbled around looking for other things that had moved. If you aren't smart enough to go looking through all the options and tabs and clicking links on Amazon (which you should be doing if you are trying to get a book listed on Amazon or get it selling) then this book will help you find a few things and get started. In the end you'll still have to be aware and have an eye to find things on your own, because they aren't where the author left them.
Dramatically Increased My Sales!

I have now published over 30 books, and this book really did have a profound effect on my sales. This was an extremely good book that did increase my sales as soon as I started implementing some of these techniques. My favorite part of the book is that the author tells you how effective each of the techniques is compared to the time spent doing them (in his own estimation). This was extremely valuable, because it allowed me to go after just the most effective & free techniques on the market. Buy the book, then go out and sell some more copies!

There's a lot to learn concerning book promotion and marketing. I've read several books on the subject and this one is my favorite. Brent Sampson explains everything so anyone can understand what is effective and what is not. I have two books to promote, one is fiction and the other technical (what the heck, look up Gerald shingleton, author) and will use this as a step by step method. I'm anxious to see how well it works.

Learned a lot which helped me. Some of the material is no longer applicable and some was not useful, but overall, I was pleased with what I learned.

Great explanation about how to market on Amazon. Would have liked links to amazon sections. Amazon requires a lot of searching. Buy this book if you have a book to market.

I thought it was ok but could have made it a little simpler for a non techie.
Wrong from the start.

The author of this book is associated with a subsidy publisher. Using a subsidy publisher kills your chances for meaningful sales up front. The book price is too high and the chances for meaningful reviews is zero. With the plethora of books on publishing this is one I don't recommend. My shortlist describes 30 or more books which have more credibility.

Helpful book that keeps things simple

I'm a professional writer and I thought Sampson's book was helpful. He keeps things simple, clear, and practical. It's possible that Amazon has tightened their standards since he wrote the book, because it's true that you have to be careful about blatant self-promotion. Place the info that you're an author in your author signature, but don't blast it so heavily that people shy away.
I do think that writing book reviews, listmania lists and So You'd Like To... submissions can be helpful, but it does take a lot of work and you must strive to have enough of them so that your helpful votes increase and your ranking rises. Having a high rank opens new vistas to you in regard to reaching more people.
I agree with those who say that the author should not give his own books five stars. I even feel funny about asking people to locate my book and give it five stars. I would suggest that you approach friends and family members casually and just say that if they have time, you would appreciate it if they would look up your book on Amazon and write a brief review. But don't check up on them and badger them. Even people close to you may begin avoiding you if you pester them constantly, especially if you're asking them to be dishonest for your sake.
It is true that Sampson is the president of a POD publisher and he doesn't try to hide that. He also doesn't crassly push people to sign on with Outskirts Press. Personally, I've sent authors to Outskirts and have a whole website dedicated to comparing and contrasting publishers like these.
